About the work:

'Studio '85' is part of the series Surat, commissioned by Photo Australia for PHOTO 2022 International Festival of Photography.

To make this work, South-Sudanese artist Atong Atem (pictured) posed as characters from her family photo albums, which span decades of history across several continents.

Atem’s restaged and reimagined scenes and characters explore self-portraiture as performance through the act of photographing and being photographed, framing and being framed. 

Surat (which translates from Sudanese Arabic as ‘snapshots’) explores geographical and historical movement. 

‘It’s about South Sudan, so-called Australia, and everywhere else in between that I’ve rested my head to dream about my people – or rather the depictions of people I don’t know but am connected to through photographs.’— Atong Atem.

Available to purchase unframed or framed in custom finish navy blue timber, chosen by the artist.

Shipping is available for framed and unframed prints to locations within Australia, calculated at checkout.

Shipping for international orders can be arranged with a custom quotation. Please email info@photo.org.au.

Shipping for orders containing more than one framed print also require a custom quote. Please email info@photo.org.au.

All purchases are protected with postage insurance.

We cannot accept returns or exchanges, except if the item is damaged in transit.

Pick up orders will be available from Fini Frames (29 Grosvenor St, Abbotsford VIC 3067). We will email customers directly regarding pick up date and times.

Customers will be notified directly about dispatch dates for delivery orders.
